Jorge Riveros Colombian, b. 1934

Jorge Riveros was born on November 10, 1934 in Ocaña, Norte de Santander. Always following the golden mean or golden ratio as a mathematical and aesthetic principle, he has devoted his life to painting as a spiritual practice, a way to elevate life and dignify reality, and a meditative and discreet method of living.

In 1964 he travelled to Spain where he studied Art History and completed his specialisation in Mural Painting. A year later he moved to Germany and held several solo and group exhibitions. As Leonel Góngora mentioned, in Germany Riveros "closed the circle", rediscovered the superb and sophisticated indigenous legacy of the American continent and dedicated himself to creating a synthesis between the elements of this unrecognised and even buried cultural heritage and the rational grammar of geometric abstraction.
In 1975 he returned to Colombia. Throughout the following years, Riveros stood out for his generosity, dedication and great responsibility towards his work. In the 1980s and 1990s, his work shows new variations. The artist approaches a lyrical abstraction, where the brushstroke, wide ranges of dark colours, archetypal elements and architectural and ornamental forms become more evident. From 1997 onwards, and more rigorously after 2010, Riveros returned to his sketches made in Germany almost four decades earlier, to continue exploring form and colour.
Today, he continues to work incessantly on the sketches, transferring them to the canvas, with "ruler and compass" in his own words, to make a return to the pure and concrete abstraction that looks more current today than ever.
