Over more than seven decades, Jim Amaral has developed a deeply singular universe in which the body is transformed, fragmented, and turned into language.
Through a carefully curated selection of drawings, sculptures, and reliquary objects created between 1969 and 1979, we’ll showcase a deep exploration of the archetypal iconography of physical forms in Jim Amaral's oeuvre. We’ll attest that in his oeuvre, figuration is not literal; it is a space for inscription where memory, myth, and consciousness converge in suspended universes where anatomy ceases to be a stable form and evolves into territories of desire, strangeness, humor, and metamorphosis.
Body becomes language is the premise of our exhibit and highlights Jim’s exploration of the subconscious and his embrace of a diverse range of physical ambiguities through a protean spectrum of expressions.
