Galería Elvira Moreno @ ZONA MACO 2023, Mexico City

Julia Carrillo, Lucio Celis, Ernesto Leal, Federico Ovalles, Joaquin Segura

In our first international art fair participation at Zona Maco 2023, we are proud to convey two of our gallery’s most important messages through the artworks of five of our represented gallery artists.  Our first one, delivered by the Venezuelan and Colombian artists  Federico Ovalles and Lucio Celis, respectively, reflects upon the disenchantment of modernism in the history of Latin America; both artists lived under the spell of idealistic promises of a modernist utopia that heralded the advent of new and egalitarian social structures all through the advent of urbanistic plans that promised better living standards, promises that evanesced as cities grew amidst the unplanned urbanistic developments, corruption, and vested political interests.  Our second one reflects on the efforts excerpted by authoritarian regimes that use censorship to curtail the artist’s expressions leading them to find safe passages through intelligent and sublimed artworks that escape their understanding by those in power.  Joaquin Segura and Ernesto Leal, from Mexico and Cuba, respectively, are represented with their most recent creations that follow their participation in the Havana Biennial and Kassel’s Documenta XV, also respectively. Our last is by the Mexican artist Julia Carrillo whom has been honored with a selection of one of her installations to be the main theme of the AMEX VIP lounge and will present works from her chosen thematic series in our stand.
