In a periodic wave, the wavelength is the physical distance between two points from which the wave repeats itself. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength, and the lower the frequency, the longer the wavelength. Frequency is the number of complete vibrations or oscillations that occur per second. On average, human beings are capable of hearing frequencies between 20 and 20,000 hertz. At lower frequencies, sounds are deep, and at higher ones, sounds are sharp. A wave oscillating at 20 hertz has a wavelength of 1.7 cm, while one at 20,000 hertz has a wavelength of 17 meters. In this work, I cut 17 meters of wood into pieces of 1.7 cm, resulting in 1,000 pieces of wood—1,000 sound undulations in space.

This work is a nod to the musique concrète composition Étude aux mille collants (Study of the Thousand Adhesives), composed in 1952 by the German musician Karlheinz Stockhausen.
