Ana Mendieta Cuba, 1948-1985

The intimate paintings of Rebecca Sharp offer portals into other dimensions, populated by the ephemera of traditional and contemporary spiritual practices. Drawing upon the language of surrealism and using the symbology of medieval painting to create her own visual language, their process of becoming is informed by the artist’s own meditative practices and metaphysical inquiries. Intervention of wheel part II refers to a new era for humankind, similar to the major evolution that took place in human society upon the invention of the wheel. This intervention, potentially of a metaphysical nature, follows on from the death of old modes and ways of being, represented in the caverns at the base of this painting. A recurring motif in her practice is that of a multicoloured pole: operating as both witness and antenna that connects the cosmos to an earthly plane, they observe the transition taking place.
